Homemade Halloween Costumes - Well, Sort Of.

I’ve had so much fun the past two years working on my girls’ Homemade Halloween Costumes.  There are alternatives to those prepackaged, sometimes cheaply made and darn-near flammable costumes in the bag.  I like to start with something I already have or from a piece of inspiration I get from an online Halloween costume store…like a cowgirl hat or a witch’s hat. I pulled out the ole sewing machine and went to town on my daughter’s witch costume.  No pattern!  A little face paint, tights a hat and she looked awesome.

And my cowgirl…well, she used a recital costume.  I bought leggings, boots and a hot pink shirt…sewed fringe down the sleeves and bought a sequin-clad cowgirl hat from an online Halloween store like HalloweenMart.

I hope everyone has a safe, fun and creative Halloween!Homemade Halloween Costumes

Some Great Ideas For Halloween Costumes For Couples

September 18th, 2009    Subscribe To Our Feed

My parents were never very strong on Halloween, nor were their friends. Even though they would take us trick-or-treating, they would never dress up for the occasion.  When I was that age, I loved to dress up in spooky costumes. I would dress up as a villain from slasher film’s, such as Jason, Freddy Krueger, or Leatherface from the Texas chainsaw massacre.

The first time I put on a couple costumes was when I was 17. I was in my first relationship then, and I was hopelessly in love. I guess all teenagers fall in love when they have the first relationship. Anyway, my girlfriend was kind of a cheese ball. She adored anything cute and romantic. At Halloween, of course, she insisted on us getting couples costumes. My friends used to make fun of me, but I persevered anyway.  I knew that couple costumes were important to her, and I didn’t want to disappoint her. We went as Tweedledum and Tweedledee that year. Although a few of my friends just had to make fun of us, it was obvious that they thought the idea was pretty funny.

After that year, couple costumes were a hit in my crew. Every year, we would go in costumes that complemented each other. Sometimes, we would be in pairs, but more often we would go as whole groups. One of the best couple costume events was when everyone dressed up as their favorite hero or villain duo. We had Batman and Robin, Superman and Wonder Woman, and a foursome dressed as the Fantastic Four. We also had a very special appearance by Baron Greenback from Danger Mouse, surrounded by several of his most villainous henchman.

With all of the previous costumes I had worn, I had more than enough supplies to make a new, seemingly fresh costume from spare pieces of previous ones.

Tinkerbell Fancy Dress Costume Tips

September 18th, 2009    Subscribe To Our Feed

Tinkerbell fancy dress is a really popular choice of costume among little girls and grown women alike. Tinkerbell costumes let us enjoy our childhood fairy fantasies and thoughts of magic and wings.

Tinkerbell fancy dress is so popular due to the well-known J.M. Barrie novel Peter Pan and all the consequent movies and animated films that have been made, based on the story, including the 2003 Hollywood blockbuster Peter Pan movie.

Tinkerbell is a tiny, tinker fairy that mends and makes things, and leaves a trail of sparkling fairy dust behind her. She can be ill-tempered but at other times she is sweet and kind to Peter. These extremes in her character are explained in the original story by the fact that a fairy’s small size prevents her from being able to have more than one feeling at a time.

These characteristics make for some fabulous costume ideas, as you can either be a kind Tinkerbell or a mean Tinkerbell.

If you’d rather dress as the kind, helpful fairy Tinkerbell then your costume should inlcude a short, green fairy dress with matching wings and some fairy dust. Just get some glitter or silver sparkle decorations for this.

There are lots of Tinkerbell fancy dress costumes on the market to buy but if you want to create your own costume there are loads of different fairy wings available on their own as well, so you can just accessorise your home-made costume.

If you want to dress as the meany Tinkerbell or be an alternative Tinkerbell wear black or dark colours. This is a great costume idea for Halloween. To make your own wear a black or grey short fairy dress and get some dark wings.

The choices are wide but if you want the best Tinkerbell fancy dress costume at the party be sure to look around and spend as much money on a costume as your budget allows. Do lots of research by looking at images of Tinkerbell to properly look the part and get into the role.

Encouraging art and creativity in your children

September 18th, 2009    Subscribe To Our Feed

Encourage your children to be creative by providing them with the time, resurces and the space for making art. Try to set aside interruption-free time for drawing, in a mess-proof zone - so that their creativity can run wild. Make sure you cover all surfaces so that any splashes of paint or scribbles of crayon are ‘caught’ - because  nothing squishes creativity more so than a parent saying “Don’t make a mess” every 2 minutes.

Choose the right drawing materials too as this is very  important. Many craft materials can be improvised, but when drawing tools and paper are required, opt for a small selection of good quality age-appropriate products, rather than loads of inferior products. Always ensure that you check safety information and follow instructions. During any ‘art-time’ children should always be surpervised because many necessary materials - such as crayons - pose a choking hazard.

Surroundings: As with writing or working at a computer, good posture and a comfortable position are important for drawing. A child-size table and chair is actually preferable to an easel. If the chair is a little high, provide a phone book as a footrest. A coffee table and an inexpensive plastic chair work well. A small kitchen storage trolley is ideal for containing supplies, or if space does not permit, a portable tackle box is a good option too. Messy toddlers may need a drop-cloth and supervision to avoid ink-stained walls, as even ‘washable’ pens often don’t deliver on that promise!

Art Materials: Avoid cheap markers, too-hard pencils and thin paints - these types of materials are discouraging to the child and therefore  a waste of money. Provide many sheets of blank paper to inspire their crativity and occasionally invest in a large canvas so that your child can paint something ‘grand’ and chances are you’ll want to hang it on your wall!  Provide also coloring books or coloring pages which are bountiful online - coloring pages are not so great for creativity, however they do provide children with the  chance to practice their fine motor skills and sometimes it’s very relaxing and just what they need to simply color in without the ‘pressure’ of thinking about WHAT to draw.

Little boys typically enjoy coloring pictures of cars and trucks while little girls usually enjoy coloring images of fairies and princesses  - at sites like Princess Coloring Pages  you’ll find the best free princess colouring

When it comes to drawing and coloring, at each age/stage of your child’s life provide….
